ABOUT NURSING THE NURSE

BUILT FROM EXPERIENCE. CREATED FOR NURSES.

OUR story

Nursing the Nurse started with a question: why are nurses expected to just “get used to it”?

Within six months of starting my nursing career, I realised how underprepared I felt for the reality of the job. I remember raising it with one of my clinical educators. Her response was simple: “Get used to it. It’s not going to change.”

That conversation stuck with me.

Because I didn’t want to spend the next several decades simply surviving my career. So I started looking for answers.

I read, researched and experimented with practical tools that could help me manage the stress, emotional load, shift work and realities of nursing in a healthier way.

Over the next few years, I built what I started thinking of as my own toolbelt. Simple strategies I could actually use in real life.

And they worked.

I was coping well in situations that could easily have overwhelmed me, and when colleagues asked what I was doing differently, I started sharing those tools with them too.

Then, a few years into my career, I had another moment that changed everything.

I was working in ICU when a patient died. At the end of the shift, several of us asked if we could have a debrief.

The response from the coordinator was:

“We’re in ICU. They either leave in a body bag or they leave for a step-down unit. It’s going to happen again, and we don’t have time because we’re at the end of our shift.”

And I remember thinking:

What happens to the nurse who doesn’t already have the tools to process this?

Because if I hadn't spent those previous years deliberately building my own toolbelt, I don't know that I would have stayed in nursing.

I could have become bitter.

I could have become overwhelmed.

I could have decided I simply wasn't cut out for the profession.

But that wouldn't have been true.

I had completed the training. I cared deeply about the work. I was capable of being a nurse.

I had simply entered the profession underprepared, under-equipped and under-supported for some of the hardest parts of the job.

And I knew I wasn't the only one.

That became the reason for Nursing the Nurse.

I wanted to take the practical tools that had helped me build a more sustainable relationship with nursing and make them easier for other nurses to find, understand and actually use.

It started with a book.

Then came education and courses

And eventually, it grew into the Holistic Huddle app and community, bringing together practical resources, expert support and conversations around the different things that affect a nurse's wellbeing.

The format has changed.

The reason behind it hasn't.

Nurses shouldn't have to figure out how to survive their career by accident.

They deserve access to the tools that can help them build a long, healthy and sustainable one.

Meet jeanelle

Nurse, educator and founder of Nursing the Nurse

I'm Jeanelle, a nurse and the founder of Nursing the Nurse.

I've worked across different areas of healthcare, including rural and regional health, metropolitan teaching hospitals, aged care and general practice.

Those experiences have shown me that while the pressures may look different from workplace to workplace, the underlying challenge is often the same:

Nurses are incredibly well trained to care for other people, but we're not always equally well equipped to care for the person doing the caring.

I don't believe the answer is another generic wellbeing checklist or telling exhausted nurses to simply “prioritise self-care”. I believe nurses need practical tools they can use in the messy reality of shift work, family life, workplace pressure, difficult patients, emotional situations and careers that ask a lot from them.

And I also don't pretend to have every answer.

That's why Nursing the Nurse has grown beyond my own experience into a platform that brings together experts from different areas of wellbeing, practical education and a community where nurses can continue building their own toolbelt.

Because the goal isn't to make nurses tougher at tolerating unsustainable circumstances.

It's to help them become better equipped to navigate their careers without losing themselves along the way.

ABOUT NURSING THE NURSE

Nursing the Nurse exists because nurses are exceptionally good at putting other people first.

Patients. Families. Colleagues. The ward. The roster. The next thing that needs doing.

And somewhere in the middle of all of that, their own wellbeing becomes something they'll deal with later.

Until later catches up.

We believe nurses deserve better than waiting until they're completely depleted before getting support.

Nursing the Nurse provides practical, accessible wellbeing support designed around the reality of nursing, not an ideal version of it.

No perfect morning routines. No pretending shift work isn't hard. No telling an exhausted nurse to simply practise more self-care.

Just realistic tools, expert support and small changes that can help nurses protect their wellbeing while continuing to do work that matters.

OUR MISSION

To help nurses build long, healthy and sustainable careers without losing themselves along the way.

Nurses shouldn't have to wait until they're completely burnt out before learning how to protect their wellbeing.

Our mission is to help nurses build the practical wellbeing toolbelt they may not have been given in training.

That means helping nurses understand what's affecting them, recognise when something needs attention, find the right tool for the situation and take realistic action before things reach breaking point.

We also work alongside healthcare organisations that want to better support the wellbeing, engagement and sustainability of their nursing workforce.

Because supporting nurses shouldn't only be about helping them recover after they're struggling.

It should also be about helping them stay well in the first place.

what we believe

We believe prevention matters.

Nurses shouldn't have to reach complete burnout before support becomes available.

We believe practical beats perfect. A five-minute action you can actually do is more useful than a perfect routine you can't maintain.

We believe wellbeing has to fit nursing. Shift work, workplace culture, staffing pressures, emotional labour and life outside of work can't simply be ignored.

We believe nurses are whole people. Your wellbeing doesn't begin when you clock on or disappear when you clock off.

We believe the right tool matters more than another generic piece of advice. Different situations need different strategies.

We believe support should create capability, not dependency.

The goal is to help nurses understand themselves, build their own toolbelt and know what to reach for when they need it.

And we believe nurses can care deeply about their work without continually putting themselves last.

OUR APPROACH

Practical wellbeing for real nursing lives.

Nurse wellbeing isn't one-dimensional.

Burnout isn't always solved by taking a holiday. Stress isn't always solved by meditation. And telling someone to create better boundaries isn't particularly useful if nobody shows them how.

That's why Nursing the Nurse takes a holistic approach.

We bring together practical education, self-paced tools, expert sessions, live conversations and community support across the different areas that can influence a nurse's wellbeing.

The goal isn't to completely overhaul your life overnight.

It's to help you work out:

- What's actually going on

- What needs your attention most

- Which tool could help

- What small action you can realistically take next

Because sustainable wellbeing usually isn't one massive transformation.

It's having the right tools available, and knowing when to use them.
